A Big Game Hunter from South Africa has been killed after being crushed by an elephant. The animal had been shot by another member of the mans hunting group.

The hunter, Theunis Botha, 51 died on Friday afternoon after one of his hunting group shot the elephant and it fell to the ground crushing him during a hint in Gwai, Zimbabwe.

The group of hunters were charged by three female elephants. One of the hunters fired a shot from his rifle and was caught by surprise by a forth elephant that stormed them from the side.

According to News24, Botha was a well-known hunter in Zimbabwe who would travel to the US to recruit wealthy Americans for trophy hunting in Southern Africa.

Following his death, a number of tributes were made on Facebook.

Zimbabwe-based Kuronda Safaris said: “It was a pleasure to have got to know Theunis he was a great man with a fantastic sense of humour we are really going to miss him and our times and stories around the camp fire.”

Simon Sparks said: “A legend has fallen but will never be forgotten… It’s with a sad heart that we say goodbye to you Oom Theunis Botha. Our deepest condolences to the family. May God be with you all in this difficult time… R.I.P.”

A booking agent also spoke out saying: “With great sadness we confirm that fellow professional hunter, outfitter and friend Theunis Botha passed away late (Friday) afternoon during a hunting accident in Zimbabwe. All our condolences and sympathy goes to Carike and kids in this time of great loss and sadness.”

This news follows a similar story reported last month in which a hunter names Scott Van Zyl was believed to be eaten by a crocodile during a hunting trip.

Although extensive search operations took place involving helicopters, divers and trackers, the father of two was not found other than his backpack being discovered.

Later Police and animal services came accross Nile crocodiles and decided to shoot them.

When they cut open the crocodiles, the found the remains of what they thought to be a human.
